The first meeting is mostly performance on both sides — everyone's best available version, rehearsed without rehearsing. The second meeting is where the real negotiation starts, when the performance can't be sustained and something more ordinary shows through. Most friendships are decided in that second meeting, not the first, though the first one gets all the credit for the introduction.
