The Compliment You Can't Accept
Some people deflect a compliment so fast it barely finishes landing — a joke, a correction, a redirect to someone else in the room. It isn't modesty, usually. It's closer to an allergy: the sentence arrives, and something in the system rejects it before it can be absorbed, regardless of how true it was.
